Red Lists

Red lists are lists of species (fauna and flora) classiied by their threat level (endangered, vulnerable etc). There are few studies on such classification in Palestine and the IUCN red list has a paucity of Palestinian species. For example we note 186 plant species listed (of over 1600 in the WB alone) of which 172 are Least Concern and 11 are included as of concern and 3 insufficient data (BirdLife International, IUCN and UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre 2019). There are species listed at https://redlist.parks.org.il/list/species/endangered based on Fragman et al (1999), Sapir et al. (2003), and Shmida and Pollak (2007). But we could also develop our own list of species and then submit some to global consideration per IUCN criteria. In a preliminary study, roughly 1/3rd of the flora in the West Bank is considered rare and in need of protection (Al-Sheikh and Qumsiyeh 2021b).
